HUGE ADELAIDE CROWD RALLIES BEHIND LOCAL DRIVER!

Wed, 23/02/2011 - 11:36am

HUGE ADELAIDE CROWD RALLIES BEHIND LOCAL DRIVER!

For the first time ever, eight 1600 horsepower methanol breathing Monster trucks converged on Adelaide Showgrounds, for a massive night at the Monster Truck Rumble.

In a night of firsts for Adelaide, a limousine was dropped by a crane from 50 metres in the air, a family won a trip to Las Vegas decided by the demolition derby, a brand new truck Buster thrilled fans with rides and a monster truck attempted a backflip, but the standout was Adelaide’s own Jack Monkhouse driving Avenger winning the Racing component.

After making his Monster Truck debut at Whyalla only last week, Monkhouse took command during the Racing component, winning it outright against Samson driven by USA’s Corey Clark. It was to be a South Australian final but Monster Patrol driven by Mark Gilbert had mechanical issues at the start line due to the warm Adelaide weather and was unable to compete.

“Racing these trucks more fun than you can imagine! You strap yourself in, smash down the accelerator and hold on tight” exclaimed Monkhouse “and to win in front of my home crowd doesn’t get any better!!”

The Freestyle component saw USA’s Corey Clark, driving Samson regain his title back from Monkhouse. Clark’s 14 years of experience came through as he was awarded a score of 92.9 out of 100 for his donuts, truck control and high flying jumps.

“I just went out there, pushed for everything I could get out of the truck and Sampson delivered” explained an adrenalin pumped Clark straight after. “I could hear the fans screaming whilst inside Sampson; it was an amazing experience I won’t forget too soon”

Still high on adrenalin, Clark returned out in Freak Show to attempt a backflip. Although it initially looked good, Freak Show landed upside down on the cars. When asked at any point did he think he was going to make it he replied “I’ve landed it a couple of times and this time felt good. It went quiet for a moment and I thought that Freak Show may make this, but that ended with a loud thud!”

Mark Gilbert from Gilbert racing was ecstatic with turnout of fans and the number of Monster Trucks competing.

“This is what it’s all about! Huge crowds being entertained by one of Australia’s newest and most exciting sports. This is a spectator sport that the entire family can enjoy together.” stated an elated Gilbert. “Whilst my drive in Monster Patrol was cut short due to mechanical issues, being able to enjoy watching the fans react to the Monster Trucks made it all worthwhile. It’s great to be able to bring this type of event into the capital cities”

Triple M added incentive to attend the show with 10 lucky listeners given the opportunity to win a holiday to Las Vegas. Each listener was allocated a car in the Demolition Derby and the winner was decided by the last car moving.

The Mystery Machine Jet Van and the Massive Fireworks Sky Show capped off the spectacular show.

ADELAIDE MONSTER TRUCK DRIVER SHINES AT WHYALLA!

Mon, 14/02/2011 - 11:11pm

ADELAIDE MONSTER TRUCK DRIVER SHINES AT WHYALLA!

Six 1600 horsepower methanol breathing Monster trucks invaded Bennett Oval in Whyalla on Saturday night and in tricky conditions a new driver shone through.

Competing alongside one of USA’s more experienced drivers Corey Clark from Montana USA and 16 year old Hayden McLeary from the Sunshine Coast, QLD was South Australian Jack Monkhouse from Adelaide making his Monster Truck debut.

In the Freestyle component all drivers were given 90seconds to impress the judges and Monkhouse was the standout performer winning the event with consistent driving and huge air in the USA designed Avenger in only his first outing in a monster truck.

“It is something else! I’ve drive rally cars and race cars fast, but behind the wheel of Avenger was an amazing experience.” said Monkhouse.“ It’s a quite different from my usual job as the lead driver of the Toyota V6 HiLux Heroes precision driving team, but driving these trucks is addictive and I’ve got Corey now putting pressure on me as he wants his title back I must thank Corey for his advise on the weekend however I live in Adelaide so Corey will have to wait a few more weeks to be a winner because I will win at Wayville this weekend.

“It was beginners luck” claims Clark” I’ve been doing this for 14 years and Jack still has a lot to learn, he just had the best run on the night.. “I’m going to have to really have to dig deep in Adelaide to impress the judges this Saturday, especially with it being Jack’s home town.”

Mark Gilbert from Gilbert Racing event management was pleased with the evening and the support from Whyalla.

“The weather in the lead up to the event affected pre sales, but as the rain eased on Saturday afternoon the crowds started to build.” said Gilbert. “Whyalla is a great venue for this type of show and a big thank you to our sponsors and the local business owners who helped to bring the show there. The spectators both young and old really had a fantastic night. The focus now is on the brewing rivalry between USA’s Corey Clark versus Adelaide’s rookie Jack Monkhouse. This is going to be exciting for the sport”

Fans were kept on the edge of their seats with the Monster Trucks reaching new heights with massive air time, gigantic jumps and the electrifying freestyle event. Extreme Freestyle Motor cross also impressed the crowds with some amazing high flying tricks.

The night was summed up best by five year old Cruise from Whyalla, by saying “That was awesome! I want to be a Monster Truck and motor bike man when I get bigger.”

A huge hit on the night was Buster the rides truck, who was kept extremely busy with fans wanting to experience what is like riding in a Monster Truck.

The Mystery Machine Jet Van and the Massive Fireworks Sky Show capped off the spectacular show.

Monkhouse will have to prove it wasn’t just beginner’s luck this Saturday night at Adelaide Showgrounds, 19th February, as Clark is primed to get the Freestyle title back. At least Monkhouse will have the home town advantage, so come down and give your support. Get your tickets early so you don’t miss out!!

Ticket available at venuetix or at the gate. Gates open 4.30pm free pit party and meet and greet with all drivers and trucks. Estimated conclusion time 9.45pm.
